The Heed fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Championship outfit on the night, with goals from Jonny Howson, Ashley Fletcher and Marvin Johnson cancelling out Connor Thomson’s penalty.

The player-manager was pleased with how his players contested against tough opposition on the night, telling gateshead-fc.com: “I thought defensively we were strong in the first half and we got in some good positions.

“I was very pleased, there were a lot of good performances and on the whole I was delighted with the lads’ application and taking on information.

“There’s a lot to work on which is also a pleasing aspect.”

A number of trialists took part at the International Stadium after a first half where 10 contracted players started, with those all making way later on in the second half.

Getting a chance to see those players against high quality opposition in Jonathan Woodgate’s side was key for Williamson.

“For those boys, coming on and getting a taste of that is only going to do them wonders,” he added.

“For myself, getting to see some of the players in this environment is good.

“They’re testing themselves at the highest level really and a lot of lads won’t have played against players of this quality before, so there’s loads of positives to take.”
