GATESHEAD midfielder Tom White has been called up to the England C squad for next week’s match against Wales C at the Peninsula Stadium.
White will join Tynesiders teammates Jon Mellish and Greg Olley in the non-league Three Lions squad for the match at Salford on Tuesday 19 March. Heed defender and England C international Robbie Tinkler has also been named as part of the contingency squad.
White scored a fine winner in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Barnet at the International Stadium.
And after receiving the news of his international call-up, the 21-year-old told Gateshead-FC.com: “I’d say it’s probably been the best couple of weeks of the season so far for me.
“Obviously to contribute to the three points on Saturday, back to back wins, was huge and now to be called up to the England C squad just tops it off and I’m pleased to be recognised for the work I’ve been putting in this season.
“I had literally just left my house when I found out, I was heading to the stadium for the bus and I just got a text to say I’d been called up and I was buzzing.
“I text my Dad straight away and he was really pleased and he’ll probably be coming down to watch as well.
“Everyone has worked really hard this season and we’ve got Busted and Clarky who have pushed us all the way and they are never completely satisfied and I’m never completely satisfied with my performance which means I’m always looking to improve on things and hopefully that will continue.”
For the second England C match running, no side will have more England C representatives in the squad than Gateshead with three.
After initially being named on the Three Lions’ stand-by list, White is now looking forward to joining up with Heed teammates as part of the England C set-up.
“It’s a big credit to the club in general to be honest,” added the Gateshead College graduate.
“We’ve got another three or four lads who could be in the squad as well so we could have been looking at having possibly six lads in there and I just think everyone deserves a massive pat on the back.
“I’m sure the three of us will go down and do the club proud.”
