By Rory Drake | The Heed secured their fifth consecutive win at the International Stadium on Non-League Day

A first half strike from Josh Kayode helped Gateshead to a fifth straight home win and clean sheet as Gateshead beat Gloucester City 1-0 at the Gateshead International Stadium.

Gloucester looked lively in the opening stages, but it was Gateshead who went ahead midway through the first half.

The Heed should have made the result more comfortable after the break but Kayode’s goal proved enough on an afternoon where Gloucester failed to record a shot on target.

Mike Williamson named an unchanged side as Gateshead looked to get a third win on the bounce, but the Heed were slow to get going.

Gateshead did take the lead with the first real opening of the match though. 17 minutes in Alex Nicholson picked out Josh Kayode with a cross from the right, with the Rotherham loanee setting himself before firing low into the bottom corner.

Gloucester’s only real chance of the half came 10 minutes before half time, when a goal-bound Zack Kotwica was cross caught by Brad James.

Dom Tear played the ball across finding Kayode who tried to backheel in, but the ball was hit away finding Greg Olley, who also saw a shot blocked from close range before Gloucester cleared.

Moments later Kayode took the ball past two men before firing a deflected shot just over the bar.

On the stroke of half time Olley had the chance to double the lead after being played in by Nicky Deverdics but Josh Bradley-Hurst was equal to his effort.

The second half took a while to get going with the first effort coming on 64 minutes when Dom Tear fired an effort which Bradley-Hurst saved.

Substitute Jordan Preston should have made the scoreline more comfortable with 15 minutes to play, but his angled effort from 10 yards was put wide.

With five minutes to go Preston came close again, beating Sam Avery before firing a shot at the near post that Bradley-Hurst turned into the path of Tear, who mishit a shot which skewed wide.

Tear then raced in behind the defence and probably should have sealed the win, but saw it turned wide by the keeper.
