A brace from Cameron Salkeld and goals from Lewis McGeoch and Connor Thomson helped Gateshead to a 4-2 win over Wearside League side Hartlepool FC in the Durham Challenge Cup Second Round.
McGeoch opened the scoring for Gateshead in the 19th minute, firing in a sublime effort from over 25 yards out. Salkeld made it two from close range after a one-two with Finlay Hayhurst.
Salkeld added a third just before half time after being played in by Thomson. The two combined again 10 minutes into the second half, with Thomson this time on the scoresheet, curling home from the edge of the box.
With just under 20 minutes to go, Hartlepool gave themselves hope with a couple of quick goals, the first a corner parried into his own net by goalkeeper Ryan Lumsden, and the second a strike by Matthew Gardner, who pounced on a defensive error to make it 4-2.
The visitors kept pushing in the final minutes, but Gateshead held firm to reach the Quarter-Finals.
After the game, U19s manager Ben Clark said: “I thought we played well in patches. I think we dominated the first half, but they still had a lot of chances, Ryan’s made a couple of good saves.
“Credit to Hartlepool, they did put us under a little bit of pressure at the end. We made a couple of individual mistakes, but these are young players, they’re going to make mistakes.
“It was a very young side today, a lot of the U19s played and a couple of the U18s lads who did fantastic.
“The four first-team lads I thought were excellent throughout the game and they gave us that little bit of quality.
“Cameron Salkeld was excellent. I expect Cameron to be excellent, no disrespect to the level that we’re playing at, but I’d expect him to shine and he certainly did tonight. He was a real threat going forward, two great goals and a good performance.”
