The Heed made it three straight wins in their final pre-season outing on Saturday afternoon, with goals from Connor Oliver, Paul Blackett and JJ O’Donnell’s penalty ensuring Flynn McNaughton’s effort proved to be a consolation for the Seadogs.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the game’s dying embers as Jordan Deacey was shown a second yellow card following a melee involving multiple players in the Scarborough half, but the result remained unchanged.
The gaffer was glad to see his side come through the game with a win and no injuries, telling gateshead-fc.com: “I was really happy we got through unscathed, no injuries and a good run-out.
“There was some very good football on show and I thought we could have had more goals against one of the favourites for promotion in the league below so I’m very pleased.
“I want to breed that winning mentality but pre-season is about getting fit and making sure we’re ready for the first game.
“Nothing is won in pre-season but the process is getting better so everything is coming together nicely.”
Williamson completed 90 minutes himself after watching Tuesday’s win over Harrogate Town from the dugout, and admitted that work is still be done in terms of transfers.
“We’re still working hard to get bodies in,” he added.
“But I’m delighted with the lads so far, I feel like only one injury [to Jordan Preston] is a win really, and hopefully he’ll be back soon.”
