League sponsors Vanarama have been busy assessing the season so far - and what’s to come!
Story so far…
Unbeaten after four is what everyone would have been looking for. But that doesn’t tell the full picture for the Heed. Four draws leave them with eight dropped points. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of play left!
What does gaffer Mike think?
Mike Williamson bemoaned their performance midweek against Bradford (Park Avenue) and said, “every single man could’ve put their hand up and said they could’ve done more.” But he went on to say he couldn’t fault the effort of his side and declared they would be working hard to find “that one missing ingredient.”
What needs to change?
The defence looks solid and will serve them well over the season if they can maintain it but it needs to be backed up at the other end of the pitch. With just two goals from four games, it’s not the return they would’ve hoped from Greg Olley and co.
JJ O’Donnell has been the shining light so far and has shown a glimpse of his unmistakeable quality. When the Heed get firing, they have the ability to go toe-to-toe with anyone in the division.
League position: 15th
Home goals for: 1
Away goals for: 1
Home goals against: 1
Away goals against: 1
Top scorer: JJ O’Donnell (2)
What the fans think…
The fans are certainly turning up in their numbers – just over 1,000 people clicked through the turnstiles on Tuesday night.
Some fans are seeing the positives so far. “Don't see any reason to worry. We are only a few games into the season. Worth remembering this is a new squad and needs to gel,” wrote @GatesheadNE on Twitter.
Kettering Town are next in the firing line for the Heed and it could be a tricky 90 minutes in Northamptonshire. The Poppies dropped two points midweek courtesy of a last-minute penalty and will be seeking redemption.
Their one to watch….
Long-serving midfield general Brett Solkhon has the ability to dictate a game if given the chance. Keep him quiet and it could be a good day!
Last time out….
Both sides were in the National League last time they met seven years ago. Kettering nicked it that day but were relegated later that season.
