Mike has a 30-year-plus association with the Heed, first becoming a part of the supporter’s club in the early 90’s before joining the club as assistant secretary in 1999.
He was an integral part of the club’s boardroom staff for a number of years, holding roles such as club secretary, chairman and also a short stint as club owner during the early 21st Century before departing midway through last season.
Mike, who most recently spent time with the Executive Committee at Blyth Spartans, spoke to gateshead-fc.com after making his return to Gateshead.
“I’m very happy, Gateshead has always been my club,” he said.
“When Neil [Pinkerton] phoned me on Sunday evening it didn’t take long to make up my mind to come back, obviously the situation at the club is very different now to what it was when I left.
“I was quite happy at Blyth doing what I was doing, but this is a bit different. It’s working at a full-time club and that’s what I want to do.
“I always looked at results after I left last season, although I didn’t come to any games. I was always interested to see what was happening, particularly when the club was edging towards the play-offs.
“It’s going to be a rebuilding exercise initially, we’ve got a new board, new manager, new coaching staff and a huge chunk of the playing squad are new as well.
“I think people have to get to know what their rules are, and I think there needs to be a bit of an infrastructure built up and we’ll take it from there.”
Vice-chairman Trevor Clark also commented on Mike’s return to the club, adding: “We are delighted to welcome back Mike Coulson in the role of club secretary.
“Mike has served the club over four decades and brings with him an absolute wealth of footballing knowledge and experience.
“As we all look forward to the new season beginning on Saturday, the board are also looking forward to giving Mike our full support in his new role.”
