The 19-year-old arrives at the Heed until September 14 to bolster Mike Williamson’s squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Kettering Town.
Tear joined the Terriers as an Under-14 player, previously appearing for Harrogate Railway.
He went on to net 10 goals in 25 games for the club’s Under-18 side in during the 2016/17 season, and was awarded Academy Player of the Year the following season after finishing the campaign as joint-top scorer for their Under-23s.
Tear spent the second half of last season on loan at Northern Irish side Larne FC in his first taste of senior football, and now joins the Heed as he looks to progress.
“I’m really happy,” he told gateshead-fc.com.
“The clubs have been speaking and I’ve heard really good stuff about the club, so it’s a no brainer for me to join.
“I’m looking to come here and impress as much as I can, score goals, get points on the board and progress from that and hopefully either get a half-season loan or a full season here.
“I know Toby [Lees] who I’ve spoken to quite a bit this transfer window so he told me how good the club was, I thought it was a really good opportunity to come and play.”
