Both sides came into the local National League North clash following wins on Saturday over Brackley Town and Chester respectively
JJ O’Donnell found the net with just three minutes on the clock, heading home Deverdics’ free-kick from close range, which ultimately proved to be the deciding factor in the game.
The midfielder spoke of a satisfied dressing room following the Heed's second consecutive win, telling gateshead-fc.com: “Everyone’s happy!
“Back-to-back wins, back-to-back clean sheets, seven points out of the last three, it’s great!
“You watched us against Farsley and we’ve come a long way in a short space of time.
"I think the fans were a bit worried at the time but they stuck by us and went to York in good numbers, and now we’re starting to change a few minds."
The former Hartlepool midfielder now has two assists in two games following JJ O’Donnell’s goal on Tuesday, and feels the early goal proved crucial.
“It’s just a carbon copy from the weekend," he said.
“I just try to get the delivery right, then it’s up to the boys to get on the end of it.
“Fortunately the last two have been two good headers and it’s looked really simple.
“It’s also a good start to the game, the early goals are important because they give us a foothold in the game and make the opponents chase the game."
The Newcastle-born playmaker also praised the 1,337 fans in attendance, adding:: “They were great!
“We knew there were going to be a few here with it obviously being a derby, but they’ve stuck by us and the lads really do appreciate it.
“It helps massively when you’re into the second half and your legs are starting to get tired but it helps when you know you’ve got the fans backing you."
