Mike Williamson’s side came into their penultimate pre-season friendly fresh off the back of a 4-2 win at Hebburn Town last Friday evening, and started against Harrogate with confidence in the first half
After close chances for the Heed courtesy of Liam Agnew, Blackett netted from the penalty spot to hand Gateshead a 1-0 win – their second consecutive pre-season victory.
The striker was thrilled with his side’s overall team performance, telling gateshead-fc.com: “I think we did well as a team, we moved backwards and forwards as a unit.
“We kept the ball well in the first half and managed to get a penalty, then we pushed on from there.
“In the second half, we kept going. The lads played excellent by defending and holding onto a clean sheet.”
The 21-year-old, who spent time with Newcastle Benfield last season, was delighted to get off the mark for the Heed from the penalty spot.
“I saw the ball get played over the top and the keeper hesitated, so I knew I was going to get there before him,” he continued.
“I took the ball around him and he brought me down so I’m happy the referee gave the call and I was able to put it in the back of the net.”
Blackett, a Newcastle United academy product, is looking forward to facing Scarborough on Saturday before the season opener against Southport on August 3.
“We’ll go into the game fully focused after this win against Harrogate and it should get the lads ready for the upcoming season,” he said.
