DEFENDER Jon Mellish is looking to continue Gateshead’s impressive start to the season following on from last weekend’s 1-0 win over Ebbsfleet.

The youngster has started every game so far this season and has been an integral part of the side since returning on loan last season.

“I think we played really well on Saturday particularly in the first half we played some good stuff going forward,” said the former under 19s full-back.

“The second half was completely different, they had a lot of the ball but it was good to win a different way.

“I know there’s been a lot of talk about inexperience but I thought apart from a couple of half chances, we limited them to very little.

“It was very pleasing from a defensive point of view but not just as a back four we defended well from the front.”

The Heed take on Braintree as the Iron look for their first three points of the season.

And Mellish admitted that despite the opposition’s league position they won’t be taking them lightly.

“For me personally I don’t look at where the opposition are before we play them, it only matters what we do on the day,” he added.

“We know we’ve got enough in our squad to come out with a result but it all depends on how we turn up on the day.”

The left-back come centre-half has been in impressive form since the start of the season and is pleased with how the season has started.

“Like I said at the start of the season I want to play football for Gateshead, I think apart from coming off once I’ve played every minute and it’s been great,” continued the 21-year-old.

“Apart from conceding some bad goals at poor points in games, I think we’ve more than held our own.

“We’ve not been battered, you know when we’ve been beaten it’s only ever been by one goal, we know that we’re inexperienced but we’ve got enough quality to go and compete against any team.”
