Gateshead returned to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory over strugglers Dagenham and Redbridge.

Goals from Steve Rigg and a first competitive Gateshead strike for Tom White saw the Tynesiders move back into play-off contention.

The Daggers started the game brightly as Elliott Romain surged forward, from the halfway line shrugging off a number of tackles, before sliding in Chike Kandi whose shot was well blocked by Scott Barrow.

Greg Olley robbed Luke Pennell of the ball on the halfway line sending Scott Boden on his way, but the former Wrexham man sent his shot over the bar.

The Heed took the lead as Barrow’s deflected cross found Tinkler at the far post, who sent a cross back into the danger area for Rigg to bundle the ball into the back of the net from three yards.

The Heed doubled their lead moments later as Hunter teed White up on the edge of the box, he rolled his marker and fired A deflected shot into the bottom corner past Elliot Justham.

Jack Hunter could’ve added a third just before the half hour mark, he rose unmarked to meet Barrow’s cross but headed inches over Justham’s bar.

The left back almost started his goal of the season contest for this season, Tinkler chipped the ball into the captain who fired a swerving volley goal bound that Justham plucked from the top left hand corner.

The visitors started the second half in a similar fashion to the first, they had two half chances as Ben Nunn blazed over from 24-yards out and then Shamir Mullings headed well wide.

Olley played a smart 1-2 with Rigg and raced away past the Daggers back line but Justham was equal to the midfielder’s shot.

Boden had a golden opportunity to add a third as he capitalised on Davey’s misskick, but he shot over.

Dagenham should’ve scored themselves just before the hour mark, a well worked free-kick routine fell to Mullings whose tame header was tipped over the bar by Pears.

Williamson then went close for the Heed as he powered a header past Justham from an Olley corner, but Mullings hooked the ball off the line.

The captain for the Daggers, Nunn, went close again after good buildup play from the visitors, his shot went inches over Pears’ bar.

It was a return to winning ways on home soil as the Heed travel to Havant and Waterlooville next Saturday.
