Gateshead FC Under 19's Clinch Title
Gateshead FC U.19s have won the Football Conference Youth Alliance north division in their first season in the competition.
Second half goals from left back David Short and Luke Carr brought a 2-0 win over Staffordshire visitors MMU Newcastle on Tyneside.
Gateshead finished level of points with Ilkeston after winning 14 of their 18 league games but had a superior goal difference.
Paul Bryson's side needed to win their final game of the season to clinch the title and they did it without England U.19 striker Michael Sweet who is on trial at Bolton Wanderers.
Sweet earlier in the week played for Hull City reserves but his Gateshead team-mates produced the goods in his absence after a tight opening half.
"To win the league at the first attempt is a great effort, especially as we got off to a slow start." said Gateshead FC U.19s coach Paul Bryson.
"The lads have had a great season, winning three other trophies, and to go six months without a defeat in the league shows their consistency and quality."
The Heed youngsters won only one and lost four of their opening six games of the season, but have not looked back since.
Lewis Lynch shot wide of the far post with Ryan King better place on 20 minutes and then Peter Jameson saved a Josh Ford snapshot at the other end.
Johny Evans cut in from the right to curl just past the far angle and then Carr fashioned an opening for himself in the box only for Liam McHugh to save.
King missed a good chance from Short's cross before MMU Newcastle missed a sitter in first half injury time when Ryan Ball shot over from close in with not even the keeper to beat.
Six minutes into the second half and Gateshead were ahead when Short fired an angled drive across goal after he had worked a short corner with Lynch.
Carr then had a header blocked on the line before good work from Evans in the 71st minute saw Carr fire into the roof of the net from close in.
King was inches wide before Tom Wakehew fired wide late on with only Jameson to beat following a rare error at the back.
The victory saw Gateshead FC U.19s end the season in style having the second best offensive record and the best defensive record in the division.
