Eddie OdhiamboGateshead reserves completed a league and cup double over League One outfit Scunthorpe United in Lincolnshire.

Alan O'Brien and Eddie Odhiambo scored the goals during an impressive second half display as the sun beat down at Glanford Park.

The victory stretched the Reserves unbeaten run to five games ahead of the Durham Challenge Cup final showdown with Spennymoor Town on Good Friday.

Scott Matthews put an early effort over the bar for the Iron but Time Deasy in the Heed goal was only occasionally tested.

Chris Moore was unlucky not to put The Heed ahead on the half hour with an angled shot that hit the bar.

A surging Odhiambo run into the penalty area then saw Josh Gillies set up Carl Magnay who shot over the bar.

A Marwood piledriver was then arrowing towards the top corner only for Iron keeper Josh Lillis to make a flying save.

Lillis also saved from Gillies following a Marwood corner before Gateshead stepped it up after the break to forge ahead.

A curling free kick from Robbie Gibbons had been saved by Deasy and within a flash The Heed were ahead.

A surging Jordan Marshall run from midfield saw the youngster pick out O'Brien with a slide rule pass that dissected two defenders.

The lightning quick O'Brien then left the full back for dead as he advanced into the box to pass the ball into the net.

Luke Hornsey's well struck drive was held by Deasy but it was Gateshead who were now dictating play.

On loan Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett was withdrawn after an hour and Dave Luke replaced captain Luke Gilbert.

Magnay, impressive as a defensive midfielder, dropped back to centre half with Odhiambo pushing into midfield when another sub, Nick Doyle, came on at right back.

It was game over when Odhiambo scored from close in after Lillis had parried a shot from substitute Dominic Brown.

Gillies fired another effort over the bar as Gateshead completed an impressive 90 minutes in the ascendancy.
