Braintree Town 1-1 Gateshead (Gateshead won 4-3 on penalties aet)
Ten man Gateshead won an epic FA Trophy 2nd round replay in Essex after extra-time had failed to find a winner after captain Ben Clark had been sent off in the second half.
That set up a nerve shredding penalty shoot-out that saw Gateshead score all four of their penalties while Tim Deasy saved Braintree's last two.
Ian Bogie's side won the shoot out 4-3 to book their place in the 3rd round and a home tie against Alfreton Town on February 4th.
There was little between the two sides in a first half that brought liitle in terms of goalscoring chances.
Andy Yiadom broke through for the Iron but was unable to get his shot away due to James Curtis' tackle.
and Braintree's only other threat came from Jai Reason whose 25-yard drive was parried by Tim Deasy with Ben Wright blazing over from the rebound.
Micky Cummins' headed straight at home keeper Nathan McDonald from 12 yards while Phil Turnbull grazed the post from just outside the box after a corner had been half cleared.
With Curtis, on his 400th Gateshead appearance forming a solid partnership with Clark, Sean Marks and Wright were feeding on scraps.
The Heed, without three of their four strikers due to injury, fell behind just before the hour when Wright made good ground to pick out the unmarked Marks.
Cummins' 6th goal of the season, however, cancelled out Marks' opener within three minutes.
Josh Gillies swung over a corner that saw the experienced midfielder send a bullet header past McDonald.
Former FA Trophy winner Chris Moore replaced fellow wide man James Marwood midway through the second half as the Heed searched for a winner.
Their hopes, however, took a hammer blow when Clark was sent off for bringing down Marks after the striker had sprung the offside trap.
Yemi Odubade almost won it but was denied by McDonald while Deasy made a fine save to deny Wright in extra-time and Iron sub Chib Chilaka missed a good chance.
Penalties then booked Gateshead's place in the last 16 as Odubade, Jamie Chandler, Sam Rents and Moore held their nerve to set up Deasy's heroics.
