Reserves draw Shildon in County Cup

Rob BriggsGateshead Reserves reward for a 3-1 County Cup win at Norton & Stockton Ancients last night is a quarter-final home tie in the Durham Challenge Cup.

The holders will take on Shildon, currently 14th in the STL Northern League, in the next stage of the competition.

"I am always happy with a home draw," said Reserves manager Paul Bryson "and it is a good chance for us to move into the last four.

"I was delighted with the performance at Norton. Conditions weren't great but we did very well and it was a good win.

"Debutant goalkeeper Lewis Sharpe is only 16 but his handling and kicking were good and I was very pleased with his display.

"He's 6' 4" and came in and did a real job for the team, as did captain Rob Briggs who chipped in with the third goal.

"Trialist Carl Magnay won his headers, was neat and tidy and looks a promising prospect.

"We did well to win the Durham Challenge Cup last season and we want to retain the trophy in 2012."

Gateshead took the lead on Teesside when Jordan Marshall rounded the Norton keeper.

His goalbound shot was turned into the net by Luke Olabode, son of former Gateshead striker Joe Olabode.

Lewis Lynch, a half-time substitute for James Marwood, increased the lead early in the second half.

The youngster cut in from the left to hammer a superb drive into the far top corner.

Former Blyth Spartans striker John Alexander then rounded Sharpe only to hit the post minutes later.

Alexander, however, got the Ancients back into the tie when he rolled Luke Gilbert to find the net from 25 yards.

Briggs then put the tie beyond doubt from just outside the box after a Martin Brittain corner had been half cleared.
