Former Republic of Ireland U.21 international Mulligan joined Gateshead for the start of the 2010/11 season following his release from Northampton Town.
The 26-year-old had his half season deal extended until the end of that campaign when he was given another six-month contract.
This season Mulligan has started just two games, the 1-3 defeat at Fleetwood Town and the 2-1 win at AFC Telford United.
His final game was last weekend when he replaced the injured Jon Shaw for the second half of the narrow defeat at leaders Wrexham.
In all the former Gillingham front man scored seven goals in 49 appearances for Gateshead.
Nix joined Gateshead in the summer following his release from Mansfield Town for whom his last game had been in the FA Trophy final at Wembley against Darlington.
The diminutive schemer, 26 next month, played 61 games for Bradford City during a two-year spell at Valley Parade before he linked up with Mansfield.
Nix, however, made just two starts in his five months at Gateshead.
