Rob BriggsGateshead reserves captain Rob Briggs has joined Blue Square Bet North neighbours Blyth Spartans on a one month loan.

The 19-year-old midfielder has yet to make his senior bow for Gateshead and has been on the bench once this season against Hebburn Town in the FA Cup.

The Gateshead College product was a key member of the Gateshead reserves side that won the Durham Challenge Cup last season.

Briggs was installed as captain of the reserves this season and was linked to loan spells at Whitby Town and Newcastle Benfield earlier in the campaign.

The Gateshead-born player's loan at Croft Park will last until December 14th and he has been given permission to play in the FA Trophy.

"Briggs is a promising midfield player who we have been looking to get out on loan as he needs experience at first team level," said Gateshead manager Ian Bogie.

"Playing in the Blue Square Bet North, which is a good standard, will further aid his development."

Briggs has shown his adaptability for the reserves this season by slotting in at both right back and centre half.

Blyth boss Steve Cuggy meanwhile is pleased to strengthen his midfield options as he attempts to drag the Spartans from the foot of the table.

"I'm pleased to get Rob in for the initial month, into what is an area of the pitch that we have been struggling in a bit," said Cuggy.

"I've known about Rob for a while and have taken in a few of his games this season with Gateshead reserves. He has come on really well both physically and technically and is clearly benefiting from the full-time training that he has been given at Gateshead."
