Team Northumbria 1-4 Gateshead XI
A Gateshead XI containing seven professionals eased to a 4-1 win at STL Northern League second division club Team Northumbria in a pre-season friendly.
The scores were level at half-time but the Heed blitzed their hosts scoring twice in the opening two minutes of the second half.
Tim Deasy, Craig Baxter, Gary Mulligan and Josh Gillies played the full 90 minutes with Martin Brittain getting an hour under his belt after injury.
Gateshead also included a young unnamed trialist in midfield and assistant manager Terry Mitchell was satisfied with the run out.
"The whole point of the match was to get game time for those who didn't feature, or played only part of the game, against Newcastle the previous night and Team Northumbria gave us a good work out," said Mitchell.
Brittain provided the crosses for Gateshead's first two goals, the first on 17 minutes when Mulligan found the net with a header.
Team Northumbria levelled through Peter Watlin nine minutes from the break after Gateshead gave the ball away cheaply and were caught square at the back.
The Tynesiders fielded the same side at the start of the second half and quickly opened up a two goal advantage.
Brittain swung in a cross that Gillies headed home and another header, from Kris Wilkinson, immediately followed from Baxter's cross after Robbie Briggs had opened up the Northumbria defence.
The fourth goal arrived just past the hour when a Dominic Brown cross from the left was turned into his own net by a Team Northumbria defender.
