Gateshead in quadruple signing

Chris CarruthersGateshead have today completed the signing of four players with a fifth, teenage midfielder Rob Briggs, also set to put pen to paper.

The signings take the Tynesiders summer signings to nine and completes manager Ian Bogie's work in the transfer market.

Experienced former Northampton Town, Bristol Rovers, Oxford United and York City utility player Chris Carruthers has joined Gateshead on a one year contract.

Former England U.20 international Carruthers, 28 next month, played 174 Football League games for Northampton and Bristol Rovers and has spent the last two years at York City.

"Carruthers is a player I tried to sign earlier in the summer," said Bogie "I'm delighted to finally get my man as he is a very experienced left sided player.

"He can play at left back or on the left side of midfield. He is a player with vast Football League and Conference experience and a great addition to the squad."

Trialists Kyle Nix, Chris Moore and Ewan Moyes have all been offered and accepted initial six month deals.

Former Bradford City midfielder Nix and wnger Moore were on opposite sides in last seasons FA Trophy final at Wembley where Moore's Darlington came out on top with a last gasp extra-time winner against Mansfield Town.

Central defender Moyes, nephew of Everton boss David Moyes, has come through the ranks at Hibernian having spent last season on loan at Scottish 2nd division club Brechin City.

Moyes, 21, also gained experience on loan at Arbroath and was on trial at Crewe Alexandra and Dundee before joining Gateshead.

"Nix and Moore are both in their mid 20s with Football League experience and are in the prime of career while Moyes has the potential to be a commanding centre half.

"Moyes is a tough character with a good attitude who we can develop while Nix and Moyes have shown up well during their five game trial period.

"They bring different assets to the squad and with young Briggs also keen to commit we have 22 players and plenty of competition for places."

All four new signings will feature in tonight's pre-season friendly at FA Vase holders Whitley Bay where Carruthers will make his debut.

Briggs, who will also be in the squad for Hillheads, will also get a run out for Paul Bryson's Gateshead FC U.19 side in Friday nights friendly at Dunston UTS.
