Josh GilliesGateshead reserves completed their league fixtures with a 3-0 defeat against an experienced Lincoln City side at Sincil Bank.

Down to the bare bones due to injuries and unavailability Gateshead's young guns held the Imps at bay in the first half before the home side scored three goals in the final half hour.

Gateshead handed a trial to Hull City teenage left back Dean Deagle while Richard Offiong, Josh Gillies and Carl Jones were the only squad members in the side.

Experienced Lincoln keeper Joe Anyon tipped over a Dan Lay volley following a corner and Gateshead contained Lincoln well during the first 45 minutes.

Jonny Ball saved from Magpie trialist Dan Leadbitter and then Congolose trialist Serge Makofo cleared the bar with a scissor kick.

The Heed's resistance was broken just past the hour when Josh O'Keefe curled a shot beyond Ball, who then saved a Clark Keltie penalty after Scott Spencer had been brought down by Michael Dodds.

Within a minute Lincoln had doubled their lead. Drewe Broughton's header came back off the woodwork and Spencer knocked home the rebound.

Anyon saved from Gillies at the other end while full back Mattie Soulsby fired into the side netting from the edge of the box.

City added a third late on when Makofo converted Spencer';s cross at the second attempt.

"We have fielded our most inexperienced side of the season against one of the most experienced sides we have come up against and done very well," said manager Ian Bogie.

"We only had three pro's in the side but the lads acquitted themselves very well and it was a great experience for them playing at Sincil Bank against a team with a lot of Football League experience.

"We contained Lincoln well in the first half and defended well. We didn't have much of an offensive threat in the game but put in a real shift."
