Scunthorpe United Reserves 0-1 Gateshead Reserves

Carl JonesGateshead reserves gave themselves a chance of finishing outside the bottom two of the totesport.com East Division with a narrow one goal success in Lincolnshire.

Central defender Carl Jones scored the all important goal early in the second half and Jonny Allan was later denied by the woodwork.

It was a solid display from a Gateshead side that finished the game with only five professionals on the pitch following the withdrawal of James Marwood and Josh Gillies on the hour.

The pair were taken off as they will be in the squad for Saturday's Blue Square Bet Premier home game against Histon.

Allan took a Rob Briggs through ball in his path to hit the post though the effort was rendered meaningless after a flag was raised for a marginal offside.

Paul Farman saved well from Jordan Thewlis in a first half of few chances on a threadbare, end of season pitch.

Gateshead dominated after the break against a youthful Scunthorpe side whose only senior professional was goalkeeoer Sam Slocombe.

The early breakthrough came when midfield man Briggs curled a right side corner on to the head of Jones who found the net from a central position.

Callum Howe had a decent effort for the Iron while Gateshead had a couple of half chances, including one for Steven Baptist.

A Gillies through ball then saw Allan almost put the game to bed with a 15 yard shot that crashed against the underside of the bar and was scrambled clear.

It was a third league win for Paul Bryson's side who will now entertain Middlesbrough's second string next Wednesday, 13th April, in their final home game of the season.
