Hull City Reserves 3-1 Gateshead Reserves

Craig NelthorpeGateshead reserves fielded a side of professionals at North Ferriby when they took on a Hull City second string that included a number of experienced first team players including strikers Jay Simpson and Richard Garcia.

The Tynesiders took the game to their Championship hosts early on, Richard Offiong firing wide on a couple of occasions.

Gary Mulligan, who played his first 90 minutes for two months, was then in only to be hauled to the ground, the referee surprisingly failing to award a penalty.

Simpson fired over from close in for the Tigers who took the lead on the half hour when Sonny Bradley's crossfield ball sent Jamie Devitt down the right.

His low cross saw experienced front man Richard Garcia convert at the near post, Paul Farman then making a point blank save from Simpson.

From the resultant corner Devitt's flag kick saw Hope Akpan rise to head powerfully home off the underside of the bar.

The half-time score was harsh on an enterprising Gateshead side who had not managed to turn neat approach play into goals.

Geordie Mark Cullen, on for Simpson, put the game beyond the Tynesiders midway through the second half when he raced clear to give Farman no chance.

Gateshead deservedly pulled a goal back when Josh Gillies and Craig Baxter combined on the right.

The ball eventually found Craig Nelthorpe lurking at the back post and the former Doncaster Rovers winger lashed a right foot shot past youngster Joe Cracknell.

Danny East then had a shot turned over by Farman while Cracknell had to pull off saves from strike pair Offiong and Mulligan to prevent Gateshead further reducing the deficit.

"I was delighted with the way the team played against a strong Hull City outfit, " said manager Ian Bogie "the lads put in a real shift and there were a number of pleasing performances, none more than James Marwood in the centre of midfield."
