Gateshead capture midfield man Ashley Winn
Gateshead have brought in Southport midfielder Ashley Winn on loan until the end of the year and the Teesider goes straight into the squad for Saturday's FA Cup tie at Notts County.
A fee of £2,500 has been agreed with Southport and Winn, 24, will sign a full-time one-and-a half year contract at the turn of the year.
Tynesiders manager Ian Bogie has been an admirer of Winn for some time and is delighted to finally have the Stockton-born player on board.
"Winn is a player we have tracked for a couple of years and we tried to get him when we were in the Conference North but he got a full-time deal at Barrow," said Bogie.
"He is a player who is always difficult to play against. He caught the eye for Southport whenever we played them and he is a verstile player.
"I see him more as a central midfielder but he's played a lot of his football at Southport on the right side.
"He is a player with a lot of energy, a good box-to-box player and the eye for the occasional goal as well, so he will be a useful addition to the squad."
Winn will train with his new team-mates this week and is delighted to finally get the opportunity to play for Gateshead.
"It has been coming for awhile and I'm happy to be at Gateshead and playing professional football again," said Winn.
"I am really looking forward to it and I'd like to think I'll be up to the task as I need to be playing fuul-time football at this stage of my career.
"It is a different style of football at Gateshead but one that will suit me better. Central midfield is definitely my preferred position.
"I was very impressed when I played for Southport at Gateshead earlier in the season when we lost 1-0.
"If it had been seven no-one could have complained. Gateshead passed us off the park and that has only happened to Southport twice this season."
Asked what he would bring to the table in terms of performance the former Oldham Athletic trainee said:
"I will bring a bit of energy into the midfield, get forward and, hopefully, start scoring goals again," added Winn.
"Gateshead will get 110% from me every week - that is a given - and if I get the chance to make my debut at Notts County I will take it with both hands."
Winn spent two years at Stalybridge Celtic before he joined Southport after a brief stay at Barrow for a £2,500 fee and helped the Sandgrounders to promotion from the Blue Square North last season.
He has also been a regular in the Southport midfield this season and recently had a trial at League One newcomers Dagenham & Redbridge.
Winn has been handed the number 14 shirt.
