Paul FarmanA young Gateshead side containing only five professionals progressed to the 2nd round of the Durham Challenge Cup with a 3-2 win over Ryhope CW at the International Stadium.

Striker Brian Wake was the only player above the age of 22 with former Sunderland reserves left back David Brown captain for the night.

Four of the senior players; Brown, Steven Baptist, Shane Clarke and Wake played the full 90 minutes while Paul Farman replaced Mark Cook in goal for the final ten minutes.

Gateshead led 2-1 at half-time, all three goals coming in a crazy four minute period around the half hour mark.

Kris Wilkinson flicked a Baptist cross past Ryhope keeper James French for the 26th minute opener

The visitors, second in the Wearside League, were level two minutes later when Danni Lay fouled Lee McMahon in the penalty area and John Butler scored from the resultant penalty.

Gateshead, however, immediately stormed back to reclaim the lead when midfield man Baptist converted Rob Briggs' ball into the box.

The game then looked to be heading towards extra-time when Ryhope substitute Chris Trewick glanced a header past Cook from Martin Metcalfe's 77th minute cross.

Wilkinson had other ideas, scoring his second of the night, and the winner, with eight minutes remaining with a left foot shot into the bottom corner after Baptist had scuffed his shot.
