Hartlepool United Reserves 4-1 Gateshead Reserves
Gateshead reserves were unable to complete a league and cup double over Hartlepool United when they lost by three goals in the totesport.com Central League on Teeside.
Trialist Bakary Bojang put Gateshead back into the game at 2-1 in the second half but Pools immediately restored their two goal advantage and then added a fourth goal late on.
Gateshead gave a second run out to former Lincoln City midfielder Shane Clarke while Hartlepool included the likes of Denis Behan and on loan Manchester City striker Jamie Poole.
Former Gateshead loanee Michael Mackay gave United an early lead after Steve Haslam's shot from distance hit the underside of the bar.
Brian Wake had a chance to level but headed wide and then Bojang had an effort deflected off target.
Mark Cook saved well from Fabian Yantorno at the other end as only one goal separated the sides at the interval.
Yantarno hit the bar with a 25 yard free kick after the break and then Mackay almost scored again with a shot on the turn.
Mackay doubled the home side's lead on the hour with his second of the night but Gateshead were back in it when Craig Baxter, fed by Josh Gillies, broke into the box.
The full back found Wake whose shot was parried by Conor Devlin only for Bojang to slot home the rebound.
Any hopes of a fightback, however, were extinguished five minutes later, when Mackay turned provider for sub. Callum Martin to shoot across Cook.
Another sub, Callum Hassan, added the fourth from Armann Bjornson's long ball, after he held off Luke Gilbert to find the bottom corner.
"There were some good performances but we got outmuscled at times," said Gateshead reserves manager Paul Bryson "we conceded early on but then had a good 20 minutes leading up to half-time.
"With better decision making in the final third we could have scored more goals and the 4-1 scoreline was harsh.
