Bogie verdict on Spennymoor friendly
Ian Bogie was delighted to see his side achieve their first win in pre-season after they were given a tough work out at Northern League champions Spennymoor Town.
An inspired performance from 20 year old goalkeeper Paul Farman and an improved second half display saw Gateshead edge home courtesy of Jonny Allan's 73rd minute strike.
With only a handful of regulars playing it was always going to be a tough test against a Moors side looking to take the scalp of the North East's newest professional clubs.
"A number of players had niggles while others were rested," said Bogie "that gave other players in the squad the chance to stake their claim and it was hard work in the first half.
"Spennymoor have a side capable of playing two divisions higher than the league they are in. They have good players and came at us in the opening 45 minutes.
"Paul Farman made some good saves including the late penalty - but that is what he is paid to do.
"I don't think we had a telling shot at goal in the first half but we were better in the second where Wake and Allan showed some good combination play.
"Our extra fitness told and we outpassed Spennymoor late in the game. It was good to get a win under our belts but as I've said before pre-season isn't all about results.
"We had a number of first teamers missing and with five friendlies to go I will be looking to bed in the side as we build up towards the start of the season."
"Work is ongoing to bring more quality players to the club over the next few weeks in several positions as we bid to get the final pieces of the jigsaw."
Gateshead now move on to Conference North club Harrogate Town on Tuesday, the Tykes having strengthened significantly during the summer.
Former Tynesiders Graeme Armstrong, Steve Bowey and Wayne Phillips will all be keen to put one over their former club while former Spartan Richard Pell has also joined Harrogate.
"Harrogate escaped relegation despite finishing bottom of the Blue Square North," added Bogie "but they will be a different proposition this season and this will be another good test for us."
