Workington 1-0 Gateshead
11/07/2010, by Jeff Bowron
Gateshead have opened their pre-season campaign with two single goal away defeats, the latest a 1-0 defeat at Conference North club Workington.
For the second successive game manager Ian Bogie used 23 players in the game, seven trialists given a run out at Borough Park.
Captain Kris Gate, striker Jon Shaw, schemer Phil Turnbull and broken foot victim James Curtis were all missing due to injury.
Gate, Shaw and Turnbull, however, are all expected to feature in Thursday's warm up game against Morton at the International Stadium.
All seven trialists were in the eleven that played the first half in Cumbria with the ten outfield positions changed for the second period.
On trial goalkeeper Josh Mimms played the full 90 minutes of a largely uneventful game where chances were at a premium.
Reds midfielder Connor Tinnion shot wide and had another shot deflected off target in an uneventful opening half hour before the game sprang to life late in the half.
Brian Wake had a shot saved by Aaran Taylor who then flapped at a corner but recovered to claw Wake's header away from just under the bar.
The unmarked Jonny Allan rose to head over the bar after the break while Stephen Hindmarsh cut inside to shoot straight at the keeper at the other end.
Northern League Golden Boot winner Nathan Fisher, one of several summer signings for Gateshead, shot wide before Reds made the breakthrough.
The decisive goal came midway through the second half with Adam Main's pass taking Craig Nelthorpe out of the equation to find Dave Hewson
The midfielder's cross was met by the head of Tymon who gave Mimms no chance to bring the stalemate to an end.
Phil McLuckie then broke into the box to hit a first time shot that was comfortably saved by Mimms as Workington recorded a second successive 1-0 victory.
