Gateshead v Barrow - Match Preview
08/02/2010, by Jeff Bowron
Gateshead will make at least two changes to the side that won at Mansfield Town on Saturday for Tuesday's visit of Barrow in an FA Trophy 3rd round replay.
New boys Andy Ferrell and Peter Winn are both ineligible for the Trophy tie, though Winn will be available for the quarter-final tie against York City should Gateshead reach the last eight.
Striker Graeme Armstrong is struggling with a groin injury which could see Daryl Clare and Brian Wake form a new partnership in attack.
Phil Turnbull, who missed the trip to Mansfield due to illness, or Darren Williams is Ferrell's likely replacement in the centre of midfield.
Wayne Phillips is a like-for-like replacement for Ferrell if the wide man has recovered from a hamstring strain picked up against Kettering Town.
Gateshead will have played Barrow four times in two months by the end of February and manager Ian Bogie is expecting another close encounter.
"We are expecting another tough game against Barrow as there was little between the two sides in the two games at Holker Street," said Bogie.
"It was a decent pitch up there but we won't have that luxury tomorrow, especially as there was a rugby league game played at the International Stadium on Sunday, and we have had a fair amount of rain.
"Hopefully the groundstaff will get the surface in as good nick as possible which will help us to play our normal passing game, they do a good job in difficult circumstances."
Bogie is looking for the feelgood factor from the excellent win at Mansfield to continue in the FA Trophy
"It was a great performance and result at Mansfield on Saturday and one that was a real confidence booster - but it was only one win and we won't be shouting from the rooftops
"We play Barrow twice on consecutive Tuesday's and have to make home advantage count. It would be great to get through to the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy - but in our situation all our remaining games will be cup finals."
Barrow have won only one of their last seven games and conceded a late goal to lose 1-0 at home to Luton Town on Saturday.
Captain Phil Bolland picked up a head injury that required stitches against the Hatters and is doubtful for the Trophy tie at Gateshead with the experienced Paul Jones on standby.
New striker Nick Chadwick is cup-tied so leading scorer Jason Walker and former Chester City and Darlington striker Greg Blundell are the likely front pair.
Key midfielder Rob Hulbert, who played against Gateshead last week, sits out the second of a two match ban with former Newcastle United trainee Mark Boyd his likely replacement.
Barrow's joint-manager Dave Bayliss said: "It's a massive cup tie at Gateshead and we won't need to motivate the lads. If we go out there with that same effort and attitude that we showed against Luton then we won't go far wrong."
