Three in - two out on transfer deadline day

Gateshead have brought in three players on deadline day, one on a permanent deal and two on loans until the end of the season.

Combative midfielder Andy Ferrell has returned to his native Tyneside from York City to sign an initial one-and-a-half-year deal.

Ferrell, 26, spent a season at Watford after coming through the ranks at hometown club Newcastle and made a couple of substitute appearances for the Hornets.

He then helped Hereford United back into the Football League during a two year stay at Edgar Street before joining Kidderminster Harriers where he was a regular last season.

A summer move took him to York City where he has been in and out of the side, though he scored the Minstermen's only goal in the FA Trophy win over Corby Town on Saturday.

Left sided Scunthorpe United player Peter Winn has rejoined Gateshead for a second loan spell that will see the 21 year old stay at the International Stadium for the remainder of the season.

Winn scored two goals in ten appearances for Gateshead in his first loan spell, including the last gasp equaliser against Brentford in the FA Cup.

The Grimsby-born player has made four substitute appearances for Championship outfit Scunthorpe and has had loan spells at Barrow and Northwich Victoria.

Experienced left back Paul Heckingbottom, who has made over 300 appearances in the Football League for six clubs, completes the trio of signings.

The Mansfield Town defender has signed a loan deal until the end of the season but will not be allowed to play against his parent club on Saturday.

Yorkshireman Heckingbottom, 32, made over a century of appearances for Darlington during a three year period and a similar amount for Bradford City in two spells.

Heckingbottom, who has also played for Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday and hometown club Barnsley, has made 14 appearances for Mansfield this season.

The 6' tall defender was not in the Stags side that won 3-1 at Gateshead but played in the FA Trophy defeat against Tamworth and is therefore unable to play for Gateshead in the competition.

The signings have taken the number of new faces brought in during January to six with strikers Daryl Clare and Brian Wake and wide man James Sinclair the first three.

The club are also currently trialling a 28 year old defender with experience in England, Ireland and Australia, his career having began at Bolton Wanderers.

Jamie Harwood and Darren Forsyth meanwhile have both left the club and youngster Steven Baptist has joined Northern League club Ashington on a one month loan.

Wide right player Harwood was a key member of the Gateshead side that secured back-to-back promotions and scored 31 goals in 132 appearances.

Ireland under 19 international Forsyth has been limited to just two starts and three substitute appearances after joining the club from Bray Wanderers in the summer.
