Media Watch - Gateshead boss Bogie set to sign Andy Ferrell
Former Newcastle United trainee Andy Ferrell is expected to be the first of a quartet of deadline day signings as Gateshead finalise a squad capable of winning the battle for Conference premier survival.
The 26 year old combative midfielder, previously with Watford, Hereford United and Kidderminster Harriers, is set to put pen to paper on an initial one-and-a-half year deal.
Ferrell has spent a lot of time on the bench at York City having signed for the Minstermen in the summer but signed off with the winning goal in Saturday's FA Trophy tie against Corby Town.
"Ferrell is a player I tried to sign in the close season," said Gateshead boss Ian Bogie "but the lure of a full-time contract at York meant we missed out.
"He is an aggressive player who puts his foot in. He is the sort of player we need and is a fellow Geordie so we're delighted to bring him home.
"He is a seasoned player at this level having helped Hereford back into the Football League and he did well at Kidderminster last season."
Gateshead have also offered terms to Scunthorpe United to bring left sided player Peter Winn back to Tyneside for a second loan spell.
Winn, who has also interested Lincoln City, scored two goals in ten appearances for Gateshead including the last minute equaliser against Brentford in the FA Cup.
"Winn did well and enjoyed his spell at Gateshead. He is only 21 and has a long career ahead of him and will be a good addition to the squad if the deal goes through."
Gateshead are also on the brink of breaking their transfer record with a five figure bid accepted by a fellow Conference club for a highly rated player.
Terms have been agreed with both player and club but the transfer will only go through if his current club are able to bring in a replacement today.
Gateshead are also looking at bringing in a central midfielder on loan while a defender with experience in England, Ireland and Australia is currently trialling with the club.
"It is time to freshen the squad up with wholesale changes," added Bogie "the chairman has backed me 100%. We've had to spend a bit of money but it's imperative we stay up and six or seven new faces will help us win the fight."
"We've already brought in Daryl Clare, Brian Wake and James Sinclair during the transfer window and survival is very much in our own hands."
Not all of the new boys will be eligible to play in the FA Trophy when Gateshead will travel to Barrow tomorrow after Saturday's original third round tie was frozen off.
Hamstring victims Steven Richardson and Wayne Phillips however will both be available for selection as Bogie's men bid for a place in the quarter-final and a home tie against York City.
