Paul Farman today celebrated his 20th birthday in style after he was named Blue Square Premier Player of the Month for October.

Farman has kept four clean sheets and conceded just six goals in eight games since he displaced Jim Provett in the Gateshead goal at the end of September.

The youngster however was not prepared for the news that he been selected as the Conference Premier's stand out player for October.

"I have had a good month but I never dreamt that I would be in with a chance of Blue Square Premier Player of the Month - it's tremendous news and the perfect birthday present," said Farman.

"I was nervous when I made my Gateshead debut in the 0-0 draw with Rushden & Diamonds but it has gone well for me and I have been delighted with the clean sheets.

"Coming to Gateshead has been a great move for me. This is the biggest award I have had so far in my career and while I am shocked I am absolutely delighted.

"You have got to give credit to the back four who have made me look good ! It is a team effort and hopefully there'll be more to celebrate against Brentford on Saturday."

Manager Ian Bogie was also thrilled that his decision to give Farman his chance has been rubber-stamped by a national accolade.

"This is great news for both the player and the club," said Bogie "Farman has done a fantastic job since he came into the side and has shown great maturity for one so young.

"He has been different class but it is important he doesn't get carried away, keeps his feet on the ground and continues to work on his game."

Farman will be presented with a bottle of champagne and an inscribed trophy before Saturday's FA Cup tie against Brentford at the International stadium.
