Gateshead sign former Sunderland defender
Gateshead have signed former Sunderland and Hartlepool defender Darren Williams, and the 32 year old goes straight into the squad for Saturday's trip to Cambridge United.
Teesider Williams joined Sunderland from York City in 1995 for £50,000 and played almost 250 games, over 100 in the Premier League, during an eight year period.
He also played in the incredible 4-4 Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley against Charlton Athletic in 1998 when the Black Cats lost out on penalties.
After a brief spell at Cardiff City Williams returned to his native North East to sign for Hartlepool United, where he made 73 appearances during a two year stay at Victoria Park.
A season at Bradford City was followed by a move to Scotland and he spent last season at Dundee where he played 19 games.
The experienced Williams has been drafted in following hamstring injuries to two of Gateshead's three central defenders.
Veteran Chris Swailes is out for another two weeks while Carl Jones, who limped off in the midweek defeat against York City, has a torn hamstring and will be sidelined for another month.
Attempts to bring in a forward ahead of the transfer deadline next week are ongoing.
