Gateshead complete squad

Gateshead have completed their squad ahead of the new Blue Square Premier season with the addition of German midfielder Christoph Ascherl and left back Phil Cave.

Ascherl, who will be available in the near future, has trained with Gateshead throughout pre-season but has not been able to play due to international clearance not being received.

"Ascherl is a good athlete who has worked hard in training and has looked good," said manager Ian Bogie "we would like to have taken a look at him in pre-season but it wasn't to be.

"However he has impressed enough in training for us to sign him on non-contract forms and we will review the situation at Christmas."

Cave had been expected to put pen to paper earlier but circumstances dictated otherwise. The 23 year old however has now put pen to paper on a one year deal with an extra years option.

"There was never a problem about Cave signing,"added Bogie "it didn't work out for him at Livingston but it is good to have him back in the fold."

The signing of Ascherl and Cave takes Gateshead's squad up to 22 ahead of the transfer window closing at the end of August.

"We have strengthened the squad after promotion, have cover in all areas and genuine competition for places all across the pitch," said chairman Graham Wood.
