Workington 1 - 2 Gateshead

Gateshead grabbed two goals in an even first half to set up victory at Borough Park.

Workington possibly shaded the first half in terms of possession but it was Gateshead who produced the more clinical finishing.

The first chance of the game fell to the home side but Callum Ruttledge couldn't get his header on target when rising above the Gateshead defence to a right wing cross.

Gateshead took the lead on 13 minutes when Tony Caig's punch failed to clear the area and the ball was returned quickly to Graeme Armstrong who swivelled on the penalty spot to hammer home into the bottom corner.

Workington drew level on 40 minutes when Anthony Wright chipped in a left wing cross which Matt Henney took in his stride before clipping the ball past Jim Provett.

Gateshead regained the lead within four minutes when a powerful shot from the hard working Armstrong was parried by Caig only for Wayne Phillips to come through unmarked and drive the loose ball into the empty net.

The visitors were in control following the break with the best chance of the half falling to Stephen Richardson who saw his shot brilliantly saved by Caig. Two superb defensive blocks by Lee Andrews and Anthony Wright continued to keep Gateshead at bay.

Gateshead:  Jim Provett (Paul Farman), Craig Baxter (Stephane Pelonde), Mark Robinson, Phil Turnbull (Alex Francis), James Curtis, Carl Jones (Chris Swailes), Martin Brittain, Kris Gate, Graeme Armstrong (Paul Thompson), Steven Richardson, Wayne Phillips
