Gateshead 5 - 0 Buxton
Gateshead cruised to their second comprehensive victory over playoff rivals Buxton in a matter of weeks to end the regular season in fine fashion with a 5-0 victory at the International Stadium on Saturday.
Davey Southern and Paul Brayson both scored twice, adding to a Jamie Harwoood opener as Gateshead finsihed third in the Unibond Premier Division with 85 points from their 40 games.
The home side were dominant from the off and almost took the lead inside two minutes when a Phil Cave cross found Jamie Harwood in the area and the winger hit a controlled volley just wide of the keeper's right hand post.
On 23 minutes the inevitable goal came when a Paul Brayson ball found Harwood in an identical position who this time was able to take a touch, look up and fire an unstoppable shot in to the same corner to give Gateshead the lead.
Seven minutes later and Harwood was at it again when a Davey Southern ball found the midfielder who hit an audacious chip just wide of the post.
Gateshead had chances to extend their lead against a hapless and uninventive Buxton side and the Tynesiders eventually doubled their lead moments before the interval when a Baxter cross was met by the head of Brayson who expertly directed his header past the keeper to give the hosts a 2-0 half time lead.
Half time: 2-0
Any lingering hopes the Derbyshire side had of getting something from the game were dashed seconds in to the second half when Steve Bowey collected the ball in midfield and the former York City man unselfishly played the ball square to Southern who smashed home.
With almost an hour played Ian Bogie made a triple substitution with Kris Gate, Phil Turnbull and Graeme Armstrong coming on for Bowey, Cave and Ben Hutchinson.
Four minutes later it was four when great hold up play from Southern found Turnbull who crossed from the byline where Brayson was on hand to tap home at the back post.
With seven minutes later Gateshead completed a five star performance when Southern completed his brace when a surging Harwood run found the striker outside the area who picked his spot and guided the ball in to the bottom left hand post to complete the rout.
Gatehead will now host Eastwood Town in the playoff semi-final at the International Stadium on Tuesday night.
