Buxton 0 - 4 Gateshead

Gateshead put in a stella performance to comprehensively beat play-off contenders Buxton in Derbyshire on Tuesday evening.

Goals from Phil Cave, Davey Southern, Steve Bowey and Kris Gate capped a memorable performance for the Tynesiders who maintained their impressive end of season form.

The first 20 minutes saw a fairly even contest between the two sides with little being created on a difficult surface however a confident Gateshead began to dominate proceedings midway through the first half and the away side's first real chance fell on 33 minutes when a Southern cross found Brayson's shot saved with the ball rebounding to Jamie Harwood who was also thwarted at the back post.

One minute later it was Grame Armstrong's turn to go close, flashing his effort just wide of the keeper's left hand post and out of play.

With five minutes remaining Gateshead were deservedly ahead when the ball fell to Cave in a central position outside the area and the defender fired home past the stranded keeper with the help of a small deflection to give Bogie's men a slender advantage at the break.

Buxton could well have gone in level however through a rare attack but Paul Musselwhite was equal to the effort, pulling off a great reflex save to tip the ball around the post for a corner.

Half time 1 - 0

The second half saw Buxton given a masterclass as Gateshead passed the ball around in impressive fashion, completely bossing the game and just before the hour mark the Tynesiders' possession was awarded with a second goal when a Harwood ball found Southern who made space and fired a terrific shot past the keeper and in the far left corner to double the advantage.

Any hopes of a Buxton revival were put to bed when Musselwhite was again on hand to make a terrific save that saw the stopper parry over in what was a marvelous reaction save.

Gateshead could have had a third shortly after when another goalmouth scramble saw the ball eventually fall to Armstrong who blazed his shot over the bar.

Eight minutes later and Gateshead were three up when Paul Brayson, who was a threat all evening, found Kris Gate whose 25 yard effort rebounded off the post and half cleard only for substitute Steve Bowey to make an instant impact by banging the ball home from the edge of the box.

A fantastic 45 minutes of football was rounded up five minutes before time when the excellent Gate was rewarded with a goal when another Brayson delivery saw Gate expertly place the ball in to the bottom left hand corner to round off a magnificent away performance.
