Gateshead 2 - 0 Fleetwood Town
Gateshead made it nine wins from ten in all competitions on Saturday as they defeated fellow promotion challengers Fleetwood Town at the International Stadium.
The home side, who beat Fleetwood in the corresponding fixture 3-2 last month, got off to the perfect start when midfielder Steve Bowey benefited from a goalkeeping error to give his side an early lead with his fifth goal of the season after just seven minutes.
From then on pressure from the Tynesiders, who welcomed back Kris Gate following a trial in Sweden, was almost relentless as the visitors struggled to cope with a team unbeaten since New Years Day.
The vocal home fans had more to shout about before the half hour mark when a Fleetwood defender was ajudged to havae deliberately handled in the area and Phil Cave was on hand to cooly double Gateshead's advantage.
In a game almost completely dominated by the home side, Ian Bogie's men had to settle for a 2-0 win when in truth the gulf between the two sides could have produced a more emphatic scoreline.
A 2-0 victory sees Gateshead establish a five point advantage over sixth-placed and next week's visitors to the International Stadium Eastwood Town with three games in hand and close the gap on Fleetwood Town to two points having played a game more.
