Bogie glee in striker swoop - Feb 1 2008 by Jeff Bowron, Evening Chronicle by Jeff Bowron

GATESHEAD have clinched the signing of former Newcastle, Cardiff City, Reading and Cheltenham Town striker Paul Brayson ahead of tomorrow's top-five clash at Buxton.

Brayson, 30, had his contract at York City paid up this week and had been tracked by several clubs, including his former side Northwich Victoria, Stalybridge Celtic and Halifax Town.

Gateshead were the lowest ranked club chasing the prolific goalscorer, but Tyneside-based Brayson signed last night.

Brayson said: "One of the reasons I left York City was that I wanted regular football and, while Gateshead are on the doorstep, they are also an ambitious club who are going well."

Gateshead boss Ian Bogie will pitch Brayson straight into the attack at Silverlands on Saturday with David Southern likely to be handed the suspended Wayne Phillips' roaming role.

Brayson made an immediate impact when he scored seven goals in four appearances for Gateshead in 2005 on loan from Northwich before he was recalled.

Bogie believes England non-league international Brayson can be the man to fire Gateshead to promotion, though current strike pair Graeme Armstrong and Southern have already scored 30 goals between them this season.

A delighted Bogie said: "Brayson is a big signing for the club. He's a quality striker with a proven goalscoring pedigree in the Football League and Conference.

"He knows where the net is and gives us even more firepower. His signing shows our determination to kick on and get promoted to the Conference North."

On a busy day of transfer activity Gateshead also made central defender Carl Jones's move from York a permanent one while midfielder, and former Magpie, Jamie McClen joined Newcastle Blue Star on loan until the end of the season.

"Jones has done well for us during his loan spell and has been rewarded with a one and a half year contract, and I'm hoping to sign a midfield player next week," added Bogie.

The Tynesiders however have had a four-figure bid for free-scoring 20 year old Whitley Bay front man Lee Kerr rejected by the Hillheads club.

Gateshead and Buxton meanwhile have both won their last six games with the Derbyshire outfit just pipping Gateshead for the January Team of the Month award.
