Gateshead 2-0 Newcastle Blue Star

Gateshead's good cup form continued on Wednesday night as they eased to to a comfortable 2-0 win over local rivals Newcastle Blue Star.

The home side made two changes to Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Worksop Town with Liam Atkin replacing Richard Flynn and Steve Salvin returning in place of Jamie Harwood.

Gateshead looked in control from the outset and could have taken the lead through Davey Southern ten minutes in when the striker's effort from distance flew just past Blue Star 'keeper Ryan Smith's post.

Southern again went close on twenty minutes when his freekick wide on the left avoided everybody, narrowly missing Blue Star's 'keeper Ryan Smith's left hand post.

Moments later and the Tynesiders were ahead when Wayne Phillips received the ball on the right and with plenty to do jinxed past two defenders in the box and curled his shot past the 'keeper in to the bottom right hand corner to give his side the lead.

Just before the half hour mark Blue Star striker Allun Armstrong ensured his side had a real mountain to climb when an off the ball incident saw the player aim foul and/or abusive language at the referee resulting in a straight red card.

Two minutes later and the game was effectively over when a Jamie McClen ball found Craig Baxter who delivered an expert ball for the returning Steve Salvin who headed home from close range.

On 35 minutes Gateshead nearly sealed the win when a Phillips delivery, following good pressure from the home side, found Liam Atkin who saw his diving header cannon back off the post and from a tough angle, Graeme Armstrong's follow up shot could only find the side netting.

Half Time 2-0

After just two minutes of the second half the injured James Curtis was replaced by Richard Flynn and moments later Gateshead nearly had their third when McClen's ball fell to Southern who found Phil Cave whose effort on the outside of the foot looked destined to find the net, only for the former Newcastle man to see his shot hit the outside of the post and cleared to safety.

Newcastle Blue Star where offering little in the way of attacking football however the lively Ben Pringle brought a good save from Paul Musselwhite in the Gateshead goal after 64 minutes when his effort was tipped round the post by the former Port Vale man.

Blue Star's best chance of the game came three minutes later when a cruel bounce in front of Musselwhite was dealt with, only for the ball to fall to substitute Douglas who saw his shot drive agonisingly across the face of goal before being hacked away.

With the game over as a contest Gateshead were happy to pass the ball around and come away with a 2-0 victory, which sees the side progress to the next round of the competition.
