Matlock Town 1-2 Gateshead

03/11/2007
Gateshead's FA trophy campaign continued thanks to a 2-1 victory in Derbyshire against Matlock Town.

Goals from Kris Gate and Wayne Phillips ensured the Tynesiders return from the Geoquip stadium with a victory.

Gateshead, who are unbeaten away since March, started brightly and created the first opportunity through Jamie Harwood however the midfielder saw his shot fly past Richmond's post in the Matlock goal.

Both sides were creating chances and the visitors almost took the lead midway through the half when a spectacular McClen effort from 30 yards was blazed just over the bar.

On 38 minutes Gateshead did take the lead when former Newcastle player Kris Gate made space and drove a powerful 20 yard drive in to the back of the net to give the Tynesiders a 1-0 lead.

Half time 0-1

Matlock started better in the second half and debutant 'keeper Ian Atkin was called in to action early doors when Barraclough was set free and the striker forced the stopper in to a good save.

Five minutes later and Gateshead extended their lead when a good break saw Wayne Phillips received the ball on the left and the winger drove the ball in to the corner of the goal.

In the closing stages the home side inevitably placed the visitors under pressure and they were back in the game on 71 minutes when Webster received the ball from a corner and struck a powerful effort past Atkin to redce the Gladiators errears.

Gateshead were again reduced to ten men late on when Chris Hughes was sent given his marching orders for a late challenge on Ashley however the former Darlington man may feel a straight red was harsh.

Gateshead held on to record an excellent and deserved victory to see the club progress to the next round where they will play Boston United at the International Stadium.

Full time 1-2
