Gateshead 2, Whitby 1 - Match Summary
Gateshead have now taken six points out of six with a win in their opening home game of the season.
Goals by Jamie Harwood and Steve Salvin (his second of the season) secured the win, but it could have been more with captain Steve Bowey missing a penalty on 62 minutes and Graeme Armstrong and David Southern hitting the post of ex-Gateshead keeper David Cambpell twice during the match.
Manager Ian Bogie named an unchanged team which meant Chris Hughes did not feature, despite returning from suspension. It also gave substitutes Richard Flynn and Paul Talbot the chance to regain some match fitness when they were introduced during the second half.
Harwood gave Gateshead a deserved lead on 40 minutes with a headed goal from a ball supplied by Steve Bowey. Karl Charlton then scored a shock equaliser on the hour for Whitby.
Bowey then missed his penalty before Southern again proved the creator as he crossed for Salvin to head home on 73.
Gateshead now have to wait until September 1st for their next match, when they travel to Worksop Town. THe Tigers tasted defeat on Tuesday night when they were beaten at home by Eastwood Town.
