Gateshead Confirm Three New Signings

Ian Bogie has strengthened his side by adding the signatures of former Newcastle United players Jamie McClen and Phil Cave and the former Grimsby youth player Michael Smith today.

McClen joins Gateshead bringing a wealth of experience to the club, which includes UEFA Cup football with Newcastle United. The midfielder made his Newcastle United debut in April 1999 against Tottenham and in later seasons he featured five times as a substitute in the UEFA Cup.

McClen’s one goal for Newcastle came in the 4-2 FA Cup Third Round victory in 2002 against Peterborough United, the club who replaced Gateshead in the league in 1960.

McClen has also had a spell on loan with Motherwell before signing for Carlisle followed by Blyth Spartans, Shrewsbury, Kidderminster, Bedlington Terriers and Scottish outfit Hamilton.

Phil Cave has also joined Gateshead in the triple swoop. The left back was a junior with Newcastle United with reserve team experience. Cave trialled in America for David Beckham’s new club LA Galaxy in the summer and was also scouted by Scunthorpe United.

The final signing is of Michael Smith, who had been on trial with Gateshead during the summer. The young defender was released by Grimsby last summer and will hope to get some first team experience under his belt with The Tynesiders.
