Gateshead have today clinched the signing of 23-year-old central defender Carl Magnay on a contract until the end of the season.

Gateshead-born Magnay has spent the last four years at Premier League giants Chelsea where he was a regular in the Blues reserve side.

A goal from experienced striker Adam Boyd five minutes into the second half condemned a spirited Gateshead reserves side to a narrow 1-0 Central League defeat against Hartlepool United at the International Stadium.

Gateshead U.19s keeper Peter Jameson stepped in for his debut and made a string of good saves to ensure the first half ended goalless.
