The son of former Chelsea and Derby County striker Kevin Wilson, Ryan was previously with Gateshead assistant-manager Darren Caskey at Ilkeston.

Gateshead eased to a comfortable victory over a young Newcastle side in front of a 1,514 crowd at the International Stadium for long-serving defender James Curtis' testimonial.

One minute's silence was impeccably observed before the game for Newcastle and Gateshead fan John Alder, known as 'The Undertaker', and Liam Sweeney. The players all wore black arm bands.

After three wins over local Northern League opposition Gateshead lost for the first time in pre-season in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Queen of the South yesterday.

The Scottish Championship side had also been unbeaten in pre-season and scored the only goal of the game a minute before half-time against the run of play at Palmerston Park.
